IDO YOSHIMOTO Sculpture (2022) 75x75x36

When we decided to put the exhibition together, I went to Arborica and picked up the quarter of a Redwood root which I had my eye on for a while.

Evan Shively says it was in his lumber yard for 22 years. Its provenance is from a coastal Sonoma apple orchard where the fruit trees were planted around a grove of Redwood stumps. The stumps were quartered when removed so they can be transported on the highway, they’re too big otherwise.

The piece is so sculptural as is and has so much gesture and flowing form. It was important for me not to meddle too much or break that flow. Evan noted that George Nakashima also obtained wood from the stumps of this orchard and it’s cool to think that maybe we both worked with wood from the same tree.

It’s one of the most beautiful shows I’ve ever seen. —Larry Rinder
