Oleg Savunov

The Jones Institute is pleased to announce its inaugural Emerging Artists Series.

The title of the exhibition features momentous dates: the former is when Oleg, born in St. Petersburg, was last in Russia and the latter is the day Russia invaded Ukraine. Oleg, a recent graduate of Stanford’s MFA program presents a series of photographs and collages that explore the artist's complex relationship with his home country.

In this exhibition Oleg reconceived the propaganda magazine  "USSR in Construction", published in the 1930s using photographs that he himself took in 2021 during his last visit to his homeland. Savunov's collages juxtapose these images with current news excerpts and quotes from art historian Andreas Huyssen’s Nostalgia for Ruins, creating a layered and nuanced portrait of contemporary Russia.

Oleg, a current Graduate Fellow at Headlands Center for the Arts, will be in the gallery at The Jones Institute at Minnesota Street Project for an Artist’s Reception on Saturday, October 7 from 4-6 pm. The exhibition is on view now through October 10.
